町屋「桃の節句」

Machiya Corner: Hinamatsuri
Decorations and dishes connected with Hinamatsuri (March 3rd), also known as Girls’ Day or Doll’s Festival, are displayed in the Machiya corner, which reproduces a Nagasaki’s merchant house from the Edo period. Check the full Machiya calendar here.

「島原城下之図」当館蔵

Thematic Exhibition: Shimabara Castle
Shimabara Castle was built 400 years ago by Matsukura Shigemasa. The exhibition focuses on its history in the early modern period, and on the social structure of Shimabara domain at the time, which ensured the survival of the castle.

Costume dramas in the Nagasaki Magistrate’s Office
Inside the reconstructed Nagasaki Magistrate’s Office, museum volunteers recreate trials from the Edo period (1603-1868). The skits are based on the Hankachō, historical records of criminal cases judged by the Nagasaki magistrates.

Thematic Exhibition: The Gotō Islands in the Edo Period
The exhibition delves into the history of the Gotō archipelago in the Edo period (1603-1868). Foreign vessels plied the waters surrounding the islands, and fishing, in particular whaling, was the main local industry.

外国人のためのワークショップ「つまみ細工」

Workshop for Foreign Visitors: Tsumami Zaiku
“Tsumami zaiku” is a traditional Japanese craft. Small pieces of fabric are pinched and folded with tweezers, and then assembled to form flowers and animals. In this workshop you will create two goldfish in a pond.
